Legion Vets win Midland Silver Stick Regional!
The Legion Vets added to their collection of championships by winning the Midland Regional Silver Stick sending them to the International "A" Silver Stick Championship in Sarnia January 17 - 19, 2014. The Vets went undefeated with a perfect 5-0 record against some of the best Midget A and BB teams.

The weekend got started Friday afternoon with the Vets facing Cobourg with the boys coming away with a strong 5 -1 victory. Next up was the Orillia Terriers on Saturday morning. The teams exchanged goals through the first two periods with Orillia taking a 4-3 lead late into the third period. Never giving up, the Vets stepped up the pressure and scored two goals in the last minute of play to snatch a 5-4 victory. Saturday evening saw the Vets square up against New Hamburg where a victory would guarantee a spot in the semi-finals. The team was firing on all cylinders and cruised to a 7-0 victory and reserved their spot in the semi-finals. Only thing left to be determined was whether they would finish 1st or 2nd overall. After the mathematics were done, South Muskoka came out on top and Collingwood finished 2nd overall after round robin play which meant they would face the Newmarket Redmen. The Redmen sit atop the York-Simcoe A loop and would prove to be a great test for the Vets.

Sunday morning the Vets came ready to play and put together probably their best game of the tournament and won a hard fought battle over Newmarket 2-0. Playing with a slim 1-0 lead throughout much of the game, they played a strong, tight game and held on with an late empty net goal to seal the deal and another rematch in the final with the team they most wanted to face again - South Muskoka.

Although the Vets had only managed a loss and a tie in previous meetings with South Muskoka this year, this was the Vets day. With a very solid effort through the opening two periods the Vets opened up a 2-0 lead and although giving up a goal early in the 3rd, the vets tightened up defensively and held on to take the championship game 2-1.

Thanks to the Vets for a very exciting weekend of hockey and congratulations on your win. Good luck in January at the International finals in Sarnia!
